Varietal Voyage - Malbec Pack

SKU VV

With a continued commitment to educating our customers and membership about the exciting and intriguing world of wine, A Taste of Monterey invites you to embark on a global excursion into understanding varietal wines.   Each quarter, a bottle pack of wine along with educational materials will be available.  The three bottles are specially selected to highlight and focus on a specific varietal grown in several places throughout the world. One wine will be a locally produced example, and the other two will be its international counterparts.  By focusing on a specific varietal each quarter, you truly get a sense of what that wine is all about, as knowledge of varietals is the foundation of wine education.

Thin-skinned, robust tannins, inky dark color, sun-loving and fragile to grow…which wine grape varietal are we talking about?  Malbec, or one could call it Côt or Côt Noir, as someone likely would refer to the grape if they were from the Cahors region of France.  But, isn’t Malbec one of the most popular red varietals from the famed Bordeaux region?  Or isn’t it an Argentine grape? And, isn’t the varietal primarily used for blending?  Well, yes and no.  Obviously, this intriguing grape deserves some further consideration.   Pour yourself a tall glass of the dark rich wine, paying attention to its bold purple hues, and we’ll start at the beginning...

2007 Mission Trail Vineyards Malbec - United States of America - Monterey, California
Aromas of ripe boysenberry and blueberry, integrated with spices.  The bouquet translates directly to flavors in the mouth and offers a pleasing texture balanced with mild tannins.

2008 Lamadrid Malbec - Argentina - Agrelo, Mendoza, Argentina
Very juicy, with nicely detailed currant, fig and boysenberry fruit flavors laced with mulled spice and fruitcake notes. Picks up a slightly raisined edge on the finish.

Aromas of blackberries, cherries, plums and spices. Well-balanced with supple tannins, a touch of vanilla and a clean, long finish.
