Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot is a red grape classic in Bordeaux blends.  Meaning “small green”, the name refers to a particular problem Petit Verdot grapes endure when berries fail to develop properly due to improper weather conditions.  The normally small, black berries of this varietal thrive in hot climates, which help them to ripen more reliably.  Petit Verdot is often blended with other varietals to add color, flavor and tannins to wines.  In California, Petit Verdot is most often used to make Meritage blends.  Young petit verdot typically has aromas of banana and wood.  As Petit Verdot matures, flavors and aromas of violet and leather are prominent.
