Grenache

Grenache is perhaps the most widely planted red wine grape in the world.  Some wines are made of pure Grenache, however due to low amounts of malic acid and pigment and a tendancy to oxidize quickly once bottled, most often it is the main component of red blends.  There are several varients of Grenache that produce different colored berries including Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and Grenache Rosé.  Vines are very durable, able to withstand drought and windy conditions.  Yields of abundant production often occur in alternating years, with one year of high grape production followed by a year of light production, and so on.  Grapes tend to ripen late and thrive in hot, dry climates.  California’s Grenache production is concentrated in the warm, arid Central Valley.  Typically, Grenache is heavy on the palate with flavors of fruit, blackberry and spice.  More so than particular flavors or aromas, the thick and chewy feel on the mouth is usually the most distinct and identifiable element of Grenache.
